The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is located at RAF Coningsby, an active RAF airfield which is home to the Typhoon. Originally formed in 1957, the Flight is a living tribute to all RAF aircrew and groundcrew who lost their lives during World War II.

Over the years, the Visitor Centre has welcomed over 300,000 people to its permanent gallery, temporary exhibitions space and excellent shop. Admission to the Visitor Centre is free and there is a car park and facilities for the disabled. However, there is a charge for the guided tour of the BBMF hangar, which take place from 10.30 am to 3.30 pm (3.00 pm November to February). The presence of particular aircraft in the hangar cannot be guaranteed due to the commitments of the Flight.

The BBMF operates one of only 2 airworthy Lancasters in the world out of over 7,000 which were built, the other being in Canada. Lancaster PA474 was built in mid 1945 and arrived on the Flight in 1973 when it was re-named from Battle of Britain Flight to Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Of the five Spitfires flown by the flight, P7350 is the oldest airworthy Spitfire in the world and is the only Spitfire which fought in the Battle of Britain and is still flying. In contrast, the 2 Hurricanes were produced at the end of the Hurricane production line. LF363 was the last Hurricane to enter RAF service, whilst PZ865 was the last Hurricane to be produced, but was retained by Hawker. It was presented to the Flight in 1972 by Hawker-Siddely when the Flight was based at RAF Coltishall. The 2 De Havilland Chipmunks are the last in RAF service and are used for training on tail-wheel aircraft by the BBMF pilots. The Dakota is used for a variety of roles, but also for displays.
